The Story Of The '71 Corvette
Jeff Shadbolt may be known to CCCUK members as one time partner in Mountnessing based Essex Corvettes. Specialising in mid/late 70's 'affordable' C3 Corvettes, Jeff would make regular trips over to Florida to source cars for resale in the UK. Late last year Jeff's partner decided to redevelop his property and follow other interests. The pair chose to stop trading. The problem now for Jeff was that after importing a number of nice, tidy cars he didn't have a Corvette himself ! He decided to visit Florida earlier this year and find a car for himself. So in Jeff's words :-
“ Late last year I decided to ask my seven year old son Tommy if he would like to join me on a 'boys only' Corvette hunting road trip I was planning for February 2014,
As one can imagine Tom literally jumped at the opportunity. So accordingly a ten day trip was booked, the plan being to return to the UK and ensure that Tom would not miss too many school days. I'm not sure whether it was careful planning or just good luck, but by leaving home on the 12th of Feb it meant he was only going to miss one day at school!
I felt sure that my wife would be understanding' about Tommy and I being 3000 miles away on Valentines day, and so to help things along and being the romantic fool that I am a huge bouquet of flowers was booked for delivery to her on Valentines day morning.
Our plan was to circumnavigate Florida after collecting a Mustang convertible hire car from Tampa airport. We would stay in Tampa for the first night. This turned out to be the only hotel we actually pre-booked for the entire trip! I knew I was taking a big gamble and running the risk of a seven year old getting extremely bored and potentially home sick whilst travelling around Florida. I thought that cramming in as many Corvette viewings as possible would make things worse. But I was competently mistaken Tom loved every minute of our Vette hunting!
I had been trying to plan our trip a few days in advance but everything was going to depend on so many factors. Were the cars we planned on seeing still be for sale? - would it still be convenient for us to to view them ? - would we get to see them on time ? - would the cars be 'minters' or 'old dogs' - etc etc
A major part of my plan was to go and see what from photos appeared to be a really
beautiful looking 71 350 coupé in Hudson just north of Tampa. As I was concerned about 'blowing my whole budget' on just one car so early on the trip and I had still planned on buying several cars to bring back – I decided to leave viewing this car until last.......little did I know I know know then that I would fall in love with the car later on!
Tommy and I covered about a1000 miles in 10 days. One of the days we decided to 'take a day off' and do the 'Disney thing' at the fantastic Discovery cove. It was great seeing the 'real' side of Florida with my son Tom rather than what 'Walt' wanted us to see. More meaningful for both of us really was going and seeing a total of eight C3 Corvettes. Unfortunately most of these were generally in poor condition and not the sort of vehicles I would want to ship back home. Having said that though,it was very interesting and great fun with Tom meeting the owners and listening to their 'stories'.
As planned we eventually made it to the home of Bill and Barbara who were the owners of the 71 Corvette that I had deliberately left until last. Unfortunately our time in Florida was now very limited as our flight departure was now getting very close!
As soon as I saw the car in the flesh I knew that this was the 'one' for me. Not only that but I knew that my finances would permit me to actually buy this car for myself and keep it. For me it would be a 'keeper' rather than a 'Flipper'!
Old habits die hard I guess and I tried extremely hard to find a single fault with the car. If I had found a problem it would help give me more 'leverage' when it came to the buying
negotiations. However with the knowledge that a very keen buyer from Europe (possibly Germany) was currently visiting Florida and specifically on the trail of a good 71 Corvette – things were starting to look difficult (read – expensive!) for me.
The only thing that I could find fault with the Vette was that the air conditioning pump was not connected. I just couldn't see that giving me the 'leverage' I would normally need to buy the car at a good price. I realised that I was looking at a matching numbers car with the original engine. The original radio worked. The vacuum wiper panel worked. The fibre optic system unusually was in full working order. The car was as clean underneath as it was 'up top'! Topping it all the car has a Muncie M21 manual gearbox with 3.08 rear end – I had always wanted a manual Vette! The body colour was a metallic green only used for one year – the Brands Hatch green contrasted perfectly
with the pristine 'saddle' leather interior. Tommy and I sat down with Bill and he passionately explained to us how he had owned the car for about twenty years and had subjected it to a full and no expense spared restoration about 18 years or so ago......we would have loved to learn more about his time with the Vette but time was getting short.........We agreed a price and off we went to their local bank to pay a deposit. My plan was to 'wire' the balance once we returned to the UK. In the excitement of not only finding – but actually buying the corvette of MY dreams we had to rush off to get to the airport and catch our flight home (although we did still manage to squeeze in another viewing on the way!) Unfortunately once Tommy and I got back home things didn't go as smoothly as I had hoped. I had a 'panic' - in the state of New Hampshire where Bill and Barbara lived prior to moving to Florida it is not a legal requirement with the DMV (USA equivalent to the DVLA) for cars of a certain age to have a title (or V5 logbook). Critically for me it would not be possible to export a car from the US without a title.
So I am deeply indebted to Barbara and the guys at the DMV office in Florida who came to our rescue, registering the 71 Corvette in Florida and producing a title allowing me to eventually ship the car back home. It seemed like an eternity but I think it was only
about five weeks from when Tom and I left Florida with Kev and Jamie of Hill Shipping doing their usual 1st class job of getting the car from Hudson in Florida back to its new home in Essex without so much as a scratch. If anyone is wondering how I managed to get the time to take so many hi quality pictures in such a short time........well I didn’t !
I chose to use the services of a local professional photographer back in Florida who for a very reasonable fee went to see the car for me at Bill and Barbara's and take over 70 high resolution photo's and 3 short video clips for me. I wished that I had used a container service instead of the roll-on-roll-off option. As you are not allowed to carry anything inside the car except a cover it meant that all of the trophies the car had won plus framed photo's and year specific model cars had to remain with Bill and Barbara until I can make some form of excuse to go back to Florida and collect them. May 2014 and the third Wednesday of the month is Essex section meeting at the Red Lion in Margaretting – so I decided to take it there on its maiden "voyage" .
I was very pleasantly surprised at the very positive response from all of the lads at the CCCUK Essex club meet. I cant wait now to get to a few shows this year and see if she can win any trophies this side of the pond. Thanks for reading my story”
